This cap seals your coolant system. They also act as a pressure safety valve. The lid keeps the whole cooling system pressurised and operating at a predetermined pressure. Excess pressures are relieved through the lid's integral safety valve.
A faulty lid can lead to engine overheating and excessive gas build up and pressurisation of your expansion tank.
